Literacy

Our 21st century learners are immersed in a highly digital world. Advances in technology have broadened the range of texts to which they are exposed in their daily lives.Teachers need to ensure that their students become fully literate.

Literacy skills are learnt primarily in English. Students continue to develop proficiency in Literacy as they apply their language skills to communicate effectively in other Key Learning Areas such as Science, History, Creative Arts and Religious Education.

The iPad is a wonderful tool for allowing students to read and view a variety of fiction and factual digital texts. It also encourages to use their imagination, express themselves creatively and communicate their own ideas and information when composing their own digital multimodal texts.

So, if you were a ‘fly on the classroom wall’ what might you see the students doing with their ipads?

In ENGLISH students could be:

Reading an ebook or listening to an audiobook from the eLibrary

Making a video ‘book trailer’ to promote a book they have read This book trailer was created by Alannah from OLMC Wentworthville.

YouTube Video

Recording their response to a Readers Circle session on a class blog

Class Blog Entry

Working with a classmate to create a digital story using a comic app
